01 — The Gap

0–0%

Many leaders report that only 20 to 30 percent of the people in their congregation feel deeply known and cared for.

Care that is assumed is not the same as care that is felt.

Most churches believe they are caring communities. And they are full of good people who want to help. But as needs grow more complex, good intentions alone aren’t enough. Leaders become overwhelmed. People fall through the cracks. Ministry becomes reactive.

This isn’t a failure of compassion. It’s a failure of clarity. And clarity can be built.

Every church already has a culture of care. The question is whether it was shaped by design or formed by default.

  1. 01Asking for help feels risky.Asking for help feels normal.
  2. 02Urgency drives every exchange.Leaders listen before responding.
  3. 03Exhaustion is quietly celebrated as faithfulness.Boundaries are respected, not resented.
  4. 04Care depends on a few strong personalities.Care is principle-driven, and it can outlive you.
  5. 05The loudest needs get met. Quiet struggles stay unseen.People know exactly where to turn.
  6. 06Referral feels like handing someone off.Referral widens the circle of care.

02 — The Care DNA Assessment

Where does your church really stand?

Most churches believe they care well. The people in the seats don’t always agree. In about 10 minutes, the Care DNA Assessment shows you which side of that gap your church is on, and exactly what to do about it.

  • Your Care DNA type. One of six patterns from the book, from Care by Default to Designed & Multiplying.
  • A score in five areas. Heart & Posture, Culture, Structure, Leader Health and Legacy.
  • Your next two steps. Your two focus areas, with three practical actions each and the chapters that show you how.
  • The view from the seats. Free, anonymous links so your staff, volunteers and congregation can tell you what they actually experience.

From Chapter 8 — Support Without Substitution

Rescue says, “Let me carry this for you.” Care says, “I’ll walk with you. But you have to carry what’s yours.”

03 — What you’ll build

Not another program. A way of being the church.

Shaped by more than four decades of pastoral ministry, this book gives you the posture, the language, and the structure to make care steady, shared, and sustainable.

A

Listen without rushing to fix

Learn the 80/20 rhythm and hear what’s beneath the words. The presenting issue is rarely the real one.

B

Ask questions that create ownership

Jesus was the Master Questioner. What people discover for themselves, they’re far more likely to own.

C

Support without substitution

Know the line between support and rescue, so you stop carrying what God never assigned you to carry.

D

Know when care must expand

Recognize when professional help is needed, and refer in a way that strengthens care instead of ending it.

E

Build a care model that fits you

Care Coordinators, Care Coaches, and pathways that work in a church of fifty or five thousand.

Because healthy care isn’t just something a church does.

It becomes part of who the church is.

“The church does not rise or fall on perfect answers. It rises or falls on steady shepherds. Churches do not need louder leaders. They need steadier ones.”

05 — Meet the author

A builder who shepherds.

Matt Anzivino has spent more than four decades in full-time ministry, driven by a deep love for the local church and the people it serves.

As a Licensed Life Coach specializing in pastoral care, Matt helps pastors and church staff care for people well, navigate difficult and complex situations, and develop healthy rhythms that strengthen both the people they serve and the leaders who serve them. He also coaches individuals and couples through grief, addiction, marriage, trauma, family, and leadership.

Matt has been married to his best friend and bride for 36 years. Together they have three amazing adult children and six incredible grandchildren who know them as Bella and Poppa. When he’s not serving, coaching, or writing, you’ll find him traveling with his wife, riding bike trails, at weekly family dinners, or spoiling his grandkids.

“After more than forty years of pastoring people, I still feel the pull to jump in quickly… But when someone reaches a conclusion for themselves, something shifts. It is no longer advice they received. It becomes the truth they discovered.”

Though the character and heart of God for people never changes, this book points out that the way people experience care in our time and context needs new tools. … Timely, practical, probably exactly what your church needs to regain a healthy congregation.

09 — Beyond the book

You can build this. And you don’t have to build it alone.

For churches that want help putting these principles into practice, Matt serves a limited number of leaders and teams each year: coaching, training, and speaking rooted in the book.

10 — Questions

Before you open it.

What is the Care DNA Assessment?

A free, 10-minute assessment built on the framework in A Culture of Care. You’ll get your church’s Care DNA type, a score in five areas, your two focus areas with practical next steps, and free anonymous links to see what your team experiences. Take it here.

Who is this book for?

Senior and lead pastors, church staff, care team leaders, and volunteers: anyone responsible for walking with people through life’s hardest and most formative seasons. It’s written for leaders who care deeply and want a clear framework for how to help without overreaching.

Does this only work for large churches?

No. The book shows how care looks in churches of every size. In a smaller church, one pastor may serve as both Care Coordinator and Care Coach. In a larger church, it may become a full care ministry. The model adjusts to your context; the principles stay the same.

Is this a replacement for professional counseling?

Not at all. Matt devotes two chapters to recognizing when coaching isn’t enough and how to partner with trusted, Christ-centered mental health professionals. Referral isn’t the end of pastoral care. It’s the expansion of it.

What makes it different from other books on pastoral care?

It moves beyond conversations to culture. Every chapter includes a Coaching Posture section with real stories, a “When Care Becomes Culture” vision, plus Scripture and prayer, so the book works as a training tool for your whole team, not just a personal read.

What formats are available?

A Culture of Care is available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle eBook, with a companion Workbook for individuals and teams working through the material together.

Can I buy copies for my team?

Yes. The Team Pack puts ten copies in your staff’s hands at a reduced price, and church-wide orders of 25+ get custom pricing.

Care is the heart. DNA is what sustains it. Culture is what remains.

Build what lasts.

Long after titles shift and seasons change, people will still experience the quiet strength of a church that knows how to care well.
